Info about "referer"

I have searched the forum and documentation to view discussion about the "referer" field in the visitors tab. I do not find much written. Could you provide a brief explanation about the purpose for the referer. When I click on the referer hyperlink for each visitors IP, I get an administrative 404 error page.....that doesn't tell me much about the visitor.

Hi,

It's attempting to get information about where the visitor came from but it is limited to what information is available for example if its a bot, a visitor that directly came to your site or a visitor that block information about themselves.

I find the best thing to do is hover over the link and see if it came from some where interesting etc.
